GIS for Public Gardens:

Getting Started

Instructional workshop videos from Fall 2010 seminar now available for download

The Center for Public Horticulture (CPH) has hosted two full-day workshops with a focus on GIS mapping for public gardens. Using Esri ArcGIS and the Alliance for Public Gardens GIS (APGG) Public Garden Data Model, the resources available on this page provide instructions for downloading and installing the data model template, creating and editing map features in ArcGIS, collecting GIS data in the garden, and creating plant collection maps. The instructional videos also provide crucial concepts and background information about GIS, managing and presenting garden collections data, and additional APGG support resources available for creating a public garden GIS for your own garden, park, nature center, zoo, cemetery, museum or public landscape.

The links below enable you to download and view the workshop audio and screen video in Quicktime format (click here to download a free version of Apple Quicktime). If you are interested in using GIS to create garden maps and manage your collections, consider downloading the Public Garden Data Model along with the workshop videos for a comprehensive introduction to the concepts and tools.

For additional resources and technical information, please visit the APGG website. If you are interested in attending a future workshop, please contact the Center for Public Horticulture.
